10 cottage garden tips
- Raise the garden beds so you have a turnover depth of 13-20cm.
- Plant spring annuals by the end of April if possible. Fill in any gaps later.
- Be prepared to cut and replace cottage gardens al the time, because they grow so fast in Queensland's climate.
- Fertilise regularly. I use Dynamic lifter, Tropic or Crop King 88
- Use slow-release fertiliser on lawns rather than having to fertilise every six weeks.
- Use a cylinder mower on lawns if possible.
- Scarify the lawns in October, February and March.
- Give your garden plenty of water.
- Use perennials suited to Queensland like asters, marguerite daisies, dimopotheca daisies, shasta daisies, salvias, zepranthes, spider lilies and herbs.
- If you want a garden which changes with the seasons, you have to put the time in.
